LOUISVILLE, KY — The Kentucky Mafia has officially ushered in a new era of basketball excellence, announcing today that Louisville native and Ballard High School alumni Jon Black has been named the franchise’s new Head Coach. Coach Black returns to the "502" with a resume built on winning under pressure. After establishing himself as a premier talent on the semi-pro circuit, Black recently completed a historic run in The League’s D-League winter season. Serving as a player-coach for the West End Barbarians, Coach Black was tasked with leading a team that had suffered a heartbreaking championship loss the year prior. He delivered immediately, leading the Barbarians to a redemption-fueled D-League Championship title.
"Coach Black represents the heart of Louisville basketball," said team ownership. "He understands the local landscape, knows what it takes to win at this level, and possesses the leadership needed to turn the Kentucky Mafia into a national powerhouse."
The appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Mafia. After falling just short of their ultimate goal last season ending before the playoffs, the organization is looking to Coach Black to establish a "Championship Culture" that begins long before the first tip-off.
"I grew up in these gyms, and I know the level of talent this city holds," Black stated. "We are going to be disciplined, we are going to be tough, and we are going to be the hungriest team in the league. The hunt for the 2026 trophy starts now."
Coach Black will make his official debut on the sidelines for the team's upcoming open tryouts. The Mafia is seeking a diverse mix of talent, ranging from seasoned semi-pro veterans and former collegiate athletes to the region's top rising stars.
